Experiments with 3D space

Engine: Unity

Tools: Probuilder, Progrid, URP

GUIDELINES, Bread Crumbs, and progression through space

This exercise experimented with ways to visually guide players through a level and how each segment is introduced.

Shadow - could work as a guideline and leads player's attention to the next point of interest.

Verticality - the second part of the level is situated lower and is hidden behind an elevation. This ensures that it’s introduced when the player gets to the expected position.

Bread crumbs - lone tiles suggest the optimal path further.

contrast of space size and lighting

Handful technique, used in games and real-life architecture.

Space - huge space is introduced after an intentionally smaller one, making it feel much bigger than it really is.

Light - a contrast in lighting will also guide players' attention to the intended parts of the level.

ARRIVAL

Introduction of The Red Tank.

How to introduce a certain element slowly and in a controlled manner.

0. Before the first glimpse of the final destination you follow the red pipe through level.

I. For the first time you see the goal partially and in the distance (through pipes).

(Then you lose sight of it.)

II. Second time the goal is clearly visible but out of reach.

(You lose sight of it again.)

III. When you finally reach the red tank, you get to see it from a different angle (which can be a small reward in itself).
